In an exploration of human motivation, looking at the push and pull of impulse, desire, and ultimately decision-making, commonalities are discovered. There is a willingness and need for personal wholeness, for strong and meaningful interactions. Every connection is an opportunity. What drives these needs and wants is sometimes manifested as a darker motive. In these times we forget that we are part of a larger collective, then the individual’s needs are put before that of the whole. These themes are presented through the use of contrasting materials, of obsessive labor and through the object; the eggshell that was never meant to remain unbroken.

The Plexus series is an ongoing group of installations made entirely out of regular, brightly colored sewing thread, strung from anchor points aligned in rows in opposing parts of a room The effect of the thread, when used in such a large scale, is almost that of a dematerialization of physical substance, becoming something ethereal that plays with the viewer’s perception.

John and I went down to the opening night of ArtPrize last night, specifically to the Grand Rapids Art Museum because it is always curated so well and it gets very busy on the weekends during ArtPrize.  I wanted to see this drawing of large elephants and other animals which covers a large wall.   I talked to the artist because she was continuing the drawing on the white wall surrounding the paper and she said she had been drawing since she was 3!  Quite something.

I did a photo shoot of this little 3 year old last week.  He was so sweet!  It's so great when I get little kids to do pix of now that mine are all grown up.

Bridget & I walked around downtown Sunday afternoon getting a few more Senior pictures and taking in the ArtPrize exhibits that were already going up.  This is not one of her senior pictures, haha, I just thought it was a fun one.

ArtPrize 2012!!!

We spent the day Saturday with many of the artists who are installing their work in our venue, Monroe Community Church.  Brian Whitfield is back in our church and he is one of my favorites... his work this year is outstanding as usual.



I liked this one quite well also by Aryn Vogan, called Jeremiah Tree.... Pastor Henry talked interviewed Aryn and talked about Jeremiah 17:7,  "Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream and does not fear when heat comes for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of the drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit."

Celebration on the Grand

On the weekend following Labor Day each year since 1980, Grand Rapids has a large unofficial end of summer celebration down on the Grand River complete with fireworks.  I remember going many years ago as a Freshman at Calvin and many years in between.  This year, we were invited by a couple from our church to the 30th floor of Riverfront Condos for the fireworks display which is set off from the bridge below.  What a great time and what a great opportunity for some GRAND photos!!!

Welp, I didn't know they would be that close!  Since Maria is using my widest angle lens in Peru, I had to make due.

Convocation

September 4, 2012

Yesterday, classes began at Calvin College where I work.  I have no kids there this fall since Edward graduated and Maria is in Peru, but I will survive.

Chi-town!

We enjoyed Chicago on Sunday with Ed seeing the sights and having some good old Chicago style pizza at Giordanno's.  Best pizza ever,


Of course, made it to the Bean.


And a great ride on the Ferris Wheel at Navy Pier!

Happy Labor Day!!!

John's 50th birthday was on Labor Day, so we went down to Notre Dame to see Edward and take him some things and then took the train in to Chicago Sunday and stayed Sunday night in the Palmer House Hilton.  Edward took the train back to Notre Dame Sunday night since he had class Monday!
