Celebration on the Grand

On the weekend following Labor Day each year since 1980, Grand Rapids has a large unofficial end of summer celebration down on the Grand River complete with fireworks.  I remember going many years ago as a Freshman at Calvin and many years in between.  This year, we were invited by a couple from our church to the 30th floor of Riverfront Condos for the fireworks display which is set off from the bridge below.  What a great time and what a great opportunity for some GRAND photos!!!

Welp, I didn't know they would be that close!  Since Maria is using my widest angle lens in Peru, I had to make due.

Convocation

September 4, 2012

Yesterday, classes began at Calvin College where I work.  I have no kids there this fall since Edward graduated and Maria is in Peru, but I will survive.

Chi-town!

We enjoyed Chicago on Sunday with Ed seeing the sights and having some good old Chicago style pizza at Giordanno's.  Best pizza ever,


Of course, made it to the Bean.


And a great ride on the Ferris Wheel at Navy Pier!

Happy Labor Day!!!

John's 50th birthday was on Labor Day, so we went down to Notre Dame to see Edward and take him some things and then took the train in to Chicago Sunday and stayed Sunday night in the Palmer House Hilton.  Edward took the train back to Notre Dame Sunday night since he had class Monday!

I just spent the last couple of days with my old college roommate Linda who came out to GR. She made a quick trip for the funeral of a cousin of hers who was a Navy Seal who was killed in Afghanistan. Such a sad time and funeral. It was good to see her and her family!

Summer in the City

Allison & I walked baby Aaron on Plaster Creek Trail which is right by Division and 28th Street.  You would never know you were in the middle of GR.

This past weekend, I met my friend Allison in the city to go for a walk with her baby.  He is the one I took photos of in the hospital.  Her husband was in Thailand for the funeral of his father who I had met and photographed this summer.  Rather amazing that he and baby Aaron got to be together before he died.

We stopped at the Red Rocks Amphitheater (where Maria recently saw the Avett Brothers) just west of Denver on our way back home.  John saw Jackson Browne here in August,1986 and came back to GR and met me that September and he was never "running on empty" again.  har har
